STRANGERS IN THE NIGHT

On the ninth day of Christmas, my true love sent to me

Nine ladies dancing . . .
Eight maids a-milking . . .
Seven swans a-swimming . . .
Six geese a-laying . . .
Five golden rings . . .
Four calling birds . . .
Three French hens . . .
Two turtle doves . . .

And a partridge in a pear tree.

THE NINTH DAY OF CHRISTMAS--The nine Fruits of the Holy Spirit: (1) love, (2) joy, (3) peace, (4) patience, (5) kindness, (6) generosity, (7) faithfulness, (8) gentleness, and (9) self-control. (Galatians 5:22)

The owner of the Brown Derby restaurant in Hollywood, Robert Cobb, created the Cobb salad in 1936.

According to Walter Scharfe, later president of the Brown Derby Restaurants, ".....its origin was quite by accident.  One evening the original owner, Robert H. Cobb, went to the icebox and found an avocado, which he chopped with lettuce, celery, tomatoes, and strips of bacon.

"Later he embellished it with breast of chicken, chives, hard-boiled egg, watercress, and a wedge of Roquefort cheese for dressing, and the salad was on its way to earning an international reputation."

The Cobb salad and the Caesar salad were the first modern 'main course' salads in the U.S.  Up until that time (the 1920s and 1930s) most salads were side dishes composed of greens with a simple dressing of salt and vinegar and oil.

Benjamin Fawcett was born in Bridlington in December 1808.  He served an apprenticeship to the printing and book trade and in 1830 commenced in Middle Street Driffield, as a printer, bookseller and stationer.  (This is in the UK.)

Here he brought out a collection of illustrated books for children with pictorial covers at unprecedented low prices.  The illustrations for these were all drawn and engraved by Fawcett himself.  In 1850 he gave up the retail business and moved to 'East Lodge', where he confined himself to book production.  It was here that he perfected a new process, invented by himself, for fine printing in colors.

After the early death of his first wife Fawcett married Morila Porter, whose father was a member of a well known and respected Driffield family.  Morila had been a color girl in his printing establishment.  By her he had six sons and four daughters.

Generally speaking all Fawcett's work might be divided into two categories, color print and outline grey prints, which were then hand-colored.  The outline grey prints were taken into the color room, in sets of one or two hundred, together with a color copy, which had to be followed as accurately as possible.  Fawcett liked the color girls to join his establishment at fourteen and every one of them received a most careful training.

I have a total irreverence for anything connected with society except that which makes the roads safer, the beer stronger, the food cheaper, and the old men and old women warmer in the winter and happier in the summer.

The pianist Oscar Levant was playing one evening when a woman arrived late and proceeded to distract the audience by walking directly down the center aisle.

"I stopped my performance of a Poulenc piece and began choreographing her walk by playing in time with her steps.  She hesitated and slowed down -- I slowed down.  She stopped -- I stopped.  She hurried -- hurried.

"By the time she reached her seat, the audience was in hysterics and the matron in a state of wild confusion."

Communism is idiocy.

They want to divide up the property.

Suppose they did it -- it requires brains to keep money as well as make it.  In a precious little while the money would be back in the former owner's hands and the communist would be poor again.

It seems to me that Montana is a great splash of grandeur.  The scale is huge but not overpowering.  The land is rich with grass and color, and the mountains are the kind I would create if mountains were ever put on my agenda. . . Montana has a spell on me. . . Of all the states it is my favorite and my love.   (John Steinbeck, Travels with Charley)

April 27, 1805.  The eagles, magpies, and geese have their nests in trees next to each other. The magpie particularly appears fond of building near the eagle.

On September 16, 1804, Captain Lewis noted in his journal that they named a small creek in Chamberlain, South Dakota, "Corvus," which is Latin for "crow."

"Corvidae" is the family name that science gives to birds like the crow and the magpie.

Four live magpies were shipped from Fort Mandan, South Dakota, to Washington, DC.   Only one of them was still alive when the shipment arrived four months later.  The magpie and a prairie dog that also lived through the trip were put on display in Peale's Museum in Philadelphia, one of our first natural history museums.
